Response to Dr. James Banks Lecture Democracy, Diversity and loving Justice: Education in a Global Age. Rachelle Petross lethargy 614 National University Presented to Dr. Jeffery Carr March 10, 2012 ABSRACT Dr. Banks lecture on Democracy, Diversity and sociable Justice made me reflect upon the representation I teach and the experiences that I have encountered in regards to multicultural nurture. I will sh are some of these experiences and teaching strategies and how they bear on to three of the five dimensions of multicultural education: Content Integration, intimacy Construction, Equity Pedagogy, Prejudice Reduction and Empowering School Culture. The fountainhead that came to mind as I was watching the lecture condition by Dr. James Banks was how can I give these pocket-size town, farm children the knowledge, skills, and understanding of cultural diversity to go surface into the world and be productive, compassionate citizens? Banks and reflecting on my own teaching practices three of the five dimensions of multicultural education stood out to me. The first dimension, content integration, made me start thought process about the content in my classroom. Being aware that it takes to a greater extent than just academics to create a well-rounded citizen, our school has a character traits program in place. We are trying to indoctrinate important life skills in our children. Each month we nidus on one particular characteristic, such as manners, and as a whole school we set aside fourth dimension each week to incorporate a direct pedagogy lesson in our classroom. We are finding more and more that these skills are not taught in the homes. It seems to me that we are focusing on all one part and for multicultural education to be effective...
