My Antonia has been referred to as a novel that is defective in structure (Bloom 51). Its structure is ground upon Cathers point of view, which tells the story of the main character, Jim Burden, who recounts certain moments in his life in an abstract pattern about his Antonia. The collection of books that make up the novel is about Willa Cathers image of what and to what extent Jim Burden remembers. The novel is also said to be matchless that lacks focus and abounds in irrelevancies (Wells 1). This is a direct result from Cathers inability to provide a consistent character portrayal throughout her novel. On the same note, My Antonia is said to have many variations from a theme (Wells 1).
An example of that would be when woodpecker and Pavel, two lonesome Russian settlers, tell Jim and Antonia a tragic tale that horrifies the children. This is the tale of when Peter and Pavel drove a sleigh with a bridal couple across the dark and white-hot country side and were attacked by savage wolves, where both the bride and cook were killed by the wolves. This example is what could be referred to as divergences which weaken the overall structure of the novel (Wells 1).
