Thomas builds-the-fire is one of the only characters in the story that associates with the Indian culture. Thomas has had a deep connector with the Indian culture since he was a child, when he questioned why Indians celebrate the fourth of July. People try avoiding Thomas because he oft walks around telling the same damn stories over and over again. The stories he tells are very customary in the sense, they often connect to the earth, wind, and fire; but the other Indians cannot associate with that- instead they try to disassociate with his expression of their culture, and feel broken when talking to him.
