Adeline Virginia Stephen was born on January 25, 1882 in London. Her parents Leslie Stephen and Julia capital of Mississippi having both lost their basic spouses unexpectedly, Julia was left with three children and Leslie with one (Simkin). Leslie and Julia married in 1878, and four more children followed: Vanessa (born 1879), Thoby (born 1880), Virginia (born 1882), and Adrian (born 1883). In 1895 her mother passed away from influenza, and Virginia suffered from her first mental breakdown.
Her breakdown and repeat depression, modern scholars have asserted, were also brought on by the inner abuse she and Vanessa were subject to by their half-brothers George and Gerald. After Julias death, George would accede Virginias bedroom, fling himself onto her bed, and take her in his arms. She wrote later of his violent gusts of passion, and of his doings as little better than a brutes. The suggestion was that he had committed, or at least attempted, incest with the girls, and this was Quentin Bells belief when he first wrote of these incidents. Georges behavior was said to have been responsible for Virginias sexual alarm and even contributive to her periodic fits of insanity.
