There ar valid arguments for both for and against this statement and in this essay I will be discussing and evaluating each side to reach a conclusion as to whether the place and setting in A streetcar named hope is integral to the tragedy.
A streetcar named desire is set in the French Quarter of New siege of Orleans and all of the action takes place on the first appall of a one-bedroom flat, owned by Stanley and Stella Kowalski. The prologue in scene 1 when Blanch first arrives mentions that the street name where Stanley and Stella live is called godlike field, this can be interesting to the audience as Elysium which is used in Greek Mythology is the final resting place of the fantastic and virtuous. And so it can seem that the name of the street is portend some kind of pain and deplorable which will kick the bucket later on the in the play. This pain and suffering is thence displayed at the end of scene 10 when Stanley picks up Blanches inert figure and carries her to bed and it is strongly implied that Stanley then has his way with her. The use here of inert figure shows that now it seems as if Blanche has lost all sense of her personality and usual characteristics which moderate been shown throughout the play.




However that is not the end of Blanches suffering as in scene 11 the doctor and matron have it away to pick up Blanche to take her to the mental hospital. This shows that the place and setting of the play on a street named Elysian Fields is integral for the end of the play to have a cut-off mind and meaning, which is that even those who are heroic (which arguably Blanche was to try and bear up to a physical brute such as Stanley) must suffer and must feel pain at some point.
