I.)Preface
First of all told I want to range, that although this term motif took a lot of time, I had fun writing it. I just thought it was interesting to bet on a story so close.
Despite having problems finding any literature, I would seriously non care; if we would relieve oneself to write some other term paper. Moreover, I was glad that I did non yield into any time trouble like others did.
What I tack really difficult, was the many levels of interpretation my short story had. really I only wanted to work on the mental Approach but then I decided to work on both, Sociological and Psychological Approach. I also found some theories, which I thought were just ridiculous. I did not mention them in my analysis, because in my opinion they are not necessary to interpret this story.
To conclude I want to say that I had a good time working on my term paper, although sometimes I just have not had the time to do anything else.
II.) Introduction
The short story “The Rocking-Horse Winner” by David Herbert Lawrence first published in 1926 in Harper’s Bazaar magazine deals with the conflict between a green boy, Paul, and his mother, Hester.
Paul’s parents were raised in good conditions and although they do not have enough money, they try to keep up their social position they were in once. In a talk with his mother, Paul learns that Hester blames their family’s poverty on luck. When she tells him that luck is what causes you to have money, Paul considers himself lucky. He searches for money in order to enthrall his unhappy mother in a very quaint way. He gets on his rocking- cavalry and rides it until whispers tell him who the winner of the next horse race will be. Together with his uncle Oscar and with the help of the family’s nurseryman Bassett, Paul bets on horses and wins large amounts of money.
