Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a varied metabolic condition of carbohydrate intolerance that is first accept during pregnancy. As a woman progresses through her pregnancy, the sum up in the placental hormones, lactogen, estrogen, and progesterone, produces an insulin intolerance which may lead to serious health concerns for the mother and baby (Fink, 2006). Insulin is needed by some cells to hug drug glucose across cell membranes. Without a sufficient supply of insulin, glucose set outs to pick up in the body causing hyperglycemia. To deal with the excess core of glucose, the body will begin to reduce the amount by any means possible. The bodys defenses manifest in many symptoms that interfere with daily living. The first symptom would be an increase in thirst or polydipsia which causes the blood to die diluted. This, in turn, will lead the kidneys to excrete copious amounts of water system or polyuria. When tested, the urine will be high in levels of glucose. When glucose is not used by the bodys cells, they begin to starve and the body begins to metabolize proteins and fats for energy.
This will lead to a buildup of ketone bodies and a disturbance in the nitrogen balance in blood (McKinney, et al. 2009).
Insulin resistance during a pregnancy is a foreseeable occurrence that allows for an adequate level of glucose to be used for fetal growth. Normally, beta cell function in the pancreas will increase insulin secretion. However, with GDM, these demands are not met causing many serious complications that fix both the mother and fetus (Kasputin, 2007). These complications include preeclampsia and preterm labor. In addition, excess amounts of glucose cross the placenta barrier and encourage excessive fetal growth which causes a higher risk of difficult, instrument back up labor and shoulder dystocia (Fink 2006).
